In regards to #3, Guatemala does get a very bad rap, and from my experience, it’s not justified. We recently spent one month there (March/April 2013) touring the whole country, and never once did we have any bad experience. We used the transportation system extensively, and even went to some pretty off-the-beaten track spots, without issue. We found the people to be very friendly and helpful. A lot of the scary things you hear about Guatemala are isolated incidents and definitely the exception, not the rule.
